Can you replace GPS with better localization options?
Natalia Vavilina

You probably already know that we are fighting against gadgetry and fancying the technologies. We are up to make real business cases and stories. Therefore, we strongly recommend starting your IoT project by asking Why. Why do you see a business case behind it? Why do you track these assets? Why do you need to monitor the temperature of the fridges?

The second question you should ask yourself before starting an IoT tracking project is all about data. In order to get know-how for the case, you need to define what type of data, precision, and in what time-frame it needs to be collected.

The third thing we want you to know is the total cost of ownership and return on investment.

Please, go through the list of few important documents, which can help you to qualify the use case, understand precision possibilities, and tracking modes of our devices.

Whenever you defined business case you can take a look at different technologies available for tracking use cases. The more detailed paper you can find below

GPS is not always the most suitable for those as GPS needs a very long fix time, clear sky above you, and rather high power consumption. Most people think that using GPS they receive the same behavior as they receive on their mobiles but this is not true as mobile phones use large lookup tables to speed up GPS fixes, GSM localization, WiFI localization, gyroscopes, and magnetometers plus AI. And GPS can be easily scrambled/jammed.

Plus, localization within the Sigfox network can be done in many ways:

  • Sigfox Atlas only (~ km precision)

  • Default WiFi (using 2 messages and reporting 3 MAC addresses ~10-100m precision)

  • Sigfox WiFi Atlas (using 2 messages and reporting 2 MAC addresses ~50-100m precision)

  • Precision WiFi (using 1 message and reporting 5 MAC address pointers with RSSI ~ 2m precision)

You can reach more information about the advantages/ disadvantages here.

Our hardware solution: SimplePack 4.0 Plus

  • The smartest and one of the most versatile Sigfox device integrators can build their IoT solutions upon

  • Completely waterproof through ultrasonic welding and no openings

  • Ultra-long-lasting for 10 years or 30.000 messages

  • Boosted with sensors (Accelerometer, light sensors, precise temperature, WiFi sniffer, magnetometer, reed sensor, buzzer)

  • Geolocation capability with tens of meters precision

Software solution: IO Frog platform

  • All the data is available at APIs and callbacks of Sigfox backend

  • Payloads and device management and settings are described in detail at ask.simplehw.eu

  • For fast onboarding, you can use www.iofrog.com platform 3 months free of charge.

  • Works with any type of connectivity

  • Supports all the functions of Simple Hardware devices

If you need help in setting up the device and fine-tune the settings for your concrete business case please fill in the form.

…41% of firms are in limbo in the pilot stage, and 30% are still discussing how to start, adding up to 71% of industrial firms still stuck in Pilot Purgatory.

That brings us to the question of proper discovery and validation of the potential project. Make sure to spend 80% of your time planning, analyzing, and 20% in the execution part. Next steps?

  • Don’t concentrate on technology, concentrate on the business case.

  • Calculate ROI, TCO

  • Describe integrations, resources, installation, logistics, etc.

  • Do not rush for Pilot/Solution validation until you have budgeted and approved the final service.
